BOX SCORE
Austin, Texas – Marline Chambers netted a goal in each half to propel Dallas past the Concordia University Texas women's soccer team by a 2-0 score in the season opener for both schools on Saturday, Sept. 1 at St. Stephen's.
The Knights scored the only goal they would need just 75 seconds into the match. A corner kick by Melissa Carpenter was passed over by Christiana Sulak to Chambers, who headed in the first tally to the far right post.
The Tornados outshot their opponent by a 14-10 count, including 10-6 in the second half, and had their best opportunity to tie the match in the 62nd minute when
Jordan James was awarded a penalty kick after being tripped up in the box. The sophomore transfer fired a laser on the free kick that was initially stopped by goalkeeper Brigid Hasson. James successfully collected her own rebound, but Hasson came up with another save. James tried one more time to slip the ball past the Knight goalkeeper with a third shot in a five second span. Her third attempt, however, was also stopped from point-blank range.
Dallas (1-0) would add an insurance tally before it was all over courtesy of Chambers, who weaved around a Tornado defender and beat goalkeeper
Kila Hartom with a shot to the goalkeeper's left side to make it 2-0 in the 67th minute.
Lena New tried to put the hosts on the board before it was all over, but her diving shot on an open net 10 minutes after the Knights' second goal went wide right.
Hartom went the distance in her collegiate debut for Concordia, turning away three of the 10 shots she faced. Dallas' Hasson made seven saves, including three in a matter of seconds off the foot of James, on 14 opportunities to earn the shutout victory.
Concordia (0-1) will look to record its first victory of the 2011 season when it visits Southwestern on Tuesday, Sept. 4 at 5 p.m.
