Austin, Texas –
Tyler Compton recorded 10 points and five assists in leading the Concordia University Texas women's basketball team to a 76-61 triumph over Hardin-Simmons on Thursday, Jan. 10 at the CTX Field House. With the victory, the Tornados extended their winning streak to a season-high five games.
Concordia, which led from wire-to-wire in the contest, forced Hardin-Simmons to miss 11 of its first 12 field goal attempts and jumped out to an 11-6 lead in the opening eight minutes. After Joanna Daniel converted the Cowgirls' second field goal of the game to make it 11-8 with 11:41 remaining, the Tornados broke loose with a 14-2 run.
Madi Hess canned a 3-pointer from way downtown to make it a two-possession game before Compton and
Brianna Smith converted layups to give the Tornados a 25-10 cushion.
The host school continued to pour it on before halftime.
Paige Parrish drove in for layups on consecutive possessions to balloon the lead up to 22 points at 35-13 with 1:41 on the clock. Compton then set up a Smith jumper to give the Tornados a 40-19 halftime lead.
Concordia extended its lead to 25 right out of the gates in the second half, as
Kaleigh Landry and
Sara Byrd each drained field goals to create a 44-19 score. Despite making an effort to battle back, the Cowgirls could never bring the deficit down to single digits. The visitors came as close as 122 on a 3-pointer by Coco Cartwright with under three minutes to go, but a
DJ Vallier layup followed by two
Madison Kramr free throws put the Tornados back up by 16 and in control the rest of the way.
In addition to recording 10 points and five assists, Compton also tallied two steals and two rebounds to pace the Tornados. Vallier contributed 11 points and seven boards off the bench, while
Jessie Pittman and Kramr added nine points and two boards apiece.
Hardin-Simmons (6-8, ASC 4-4) was led by Alexis Popelar and Cartwright. Both players netted 17 points, while Popelar finished with a double-double by also grabbing 11 rebounds. Candace Pollard scored nine points in just seven minutes off the bench, which included shooting a perfect 4-for-4 from the field and draining her only free throw attempt.
Concordia (9-6, ASC 6-3), which has won its last three meetings against Hardin-Simmons after dropping the first 24, will be back in action next week when it visits Schreiner on Thursday, Jan. 17 at 5:30 p.m.
