POSTGAME INTERVIEW WITH JOSH SANCHEZ AND NICK HAYNES
Austin, Texas –
Josh Sanchez recorded 22 points, five assists and five steals to lead the Concordia University Texas men's basketball team to a 92-86 win over Texas Lutheran on Thursday, Feb. 7 at the CTX Field House. With the victory, the Tornados remained in second place in the ASC West Division standings.
Texas Lutheran (7-16, ASC 5-12) led for most of the game and nearly the entire first half. Sanchez gave Concordia its only lead of the opening frame at 5-4 by sinking a 3-pointer at the 18:08 mark. Joseph Richardson then came back the other way with a layup to put the Bulldogs ahead for the remainder of the half. The visitor lead grew to 10 points when Garrett Wilkins finished a 3-point play with a good shot at the stripe before
Dwayne Patterson closed the gap by putting back a Sanchez miss to make it 43-39 at the break.
The second half was filled with eight ties and five lead changes. Concordia went on top for the first time since the opening minutes when Patterson broke a 50-all tie by canning a 3-pointer with 16:35 left.
Concordia's lead, however, was once again short lived as the Bulldogs seized control and went up by eight at 73-65 on a Justin Lindsey free throw that was converted shortly after the second media timeout. The Tornados, however, stayed within striking distance and gained momentum on a
Darien Harris dunk that tied the score at 79s with 5:15 to play.
After that game-changing play, the Bulldogs only led one more time after Brendan Holderread made two free throws to create an 82-81 score. Patterson sank a jump shot that put the hosts ahead 84-82, and Sanchez made all six of his free throw attempts in the final minute to allow the Tornados to escape with the win.
In addition to Sanchez, whose 22 points, five assists and five steals were all team highs, Concordia also got strong contributions from
Nick Haynes and Patterson. Haynes netted 15 points, which all came in the second half, and added four steals. Patterson posted 18 points and six boards.
Texas Lutheran was paced by Brandon Potts, who led five Bulldogs in double figures with 16 points. He also fell just shy of a double-double by pulling down nine rebounds. Justin Lindsey and Holderread netted 14 and 13 poingts, respectively, while Holderread also registered nine boards.
Concordia (17-5, ASC 12-4), which plays the remainder of the regular season at home, will host Schreiner on Saturday, Feb. 9 at 3 p.m.
