BOX SCORE
Goodyear, Ariz. –
Bristan Clingaman pitched three scoreless innings of relief, but the Concordia University Texas baseball team dropped a 3-0 decision to Pacific Lutheran on Friday, Feb. 8 at Desert Edge High School as part of the Arizona Desert Classic. The Tornados had six different players record one hit.
Pacific Lutheran (2-2) scored in the top of the first inning and never looked back despite leaving 14 runners on base. Jacob Olsufka led off the game with a single and scored two batters later when Alec Beal grounded into a double play.
With Max Beatty in control on the mound, the Lutes added one more run in the third and fifth frames. Drew Oord and Alec Beal each recorded RBI hits to provide insurance.
Concordia (0-4) had its best chance to get on the board in the bottom of the seventh, as
Kyle Rodriguez drew a walk and
Andrew Burns singled up the middle to put runners on first and second with only one out. However,
Matt Smith lined into a double play to end the threat before Beatty and Chris Bishop combined to keep the Tornados off the board.
Colin Butschek suffered the loss for Concordia and fell to 0-2 on the year after yielding seven hits and two runs, which were both earned, in 2.1 innings of work. Beatty, who was Baseball America's top Division III prospect in 2011, picked up the victory for Pacific Lutheran and improved his ledger to 2-0 by hurling eight shutout innings. He allowed five hits and struck out 12 while issuing just two walks. Chris Bishop picked up the save by pitching a scoreless ninth.
Concordia continues play at the Arizona Desert Classic when it faces Whittier tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. Central. The game will be played at Boulder Creek High School in Anthem, Ariz.
