Baseball Swept by Texas-Dallas in Road Doubleheader

Andrew Burns recorded four hits and went yard twice, but the Concordia University Texas baseball team fell to Texas-Dallas in a doubleheader on Saturday, March 2 at the UTD Baseball Complex. The Tornados fell by score of 6-5 and 10-5.

Concordia struck first in the early game by getting an RBI single from Matt Smith in the first inning and a solo homer from Jon McManemin in the second. Texas-Dallas, however, came back and plated a combined three runs in the bottom of the second and third frames. Brandon Clouch most notably had a two-run single down the line in left to put the Comets ahead for the time being, but rBurns responded by blasting two home runs in the fourth and sixth frames to put the visitors on top by a score of 5-3.

Despite trailing for most of the game, Texas-Dallas continued to chip away and was able to score one run in the sixth, seventh and eight innings in a game that was scheduled to be seven frames. Jacob Price delivered the walk-off hit in the bottom of the eighth to plate Daniel Saxson and give the hosts the 6-5 win.

Micah Easterling earned the win for Texas-Dallas and improved to 1-0 by allowing one hit over three shutout innings. Ryan Ullmann suffered the loss for Concordia and fell to 1-1. He gave up an uncharacteristic five hits and two runs, which were both earned, while fanning one in 1.1 frames.

Concordia also got on the board first in the later game, scoring twice in the top of the second. Burns and Quinn Guest belted back-to-back doubles to begin the frame before Tyler Bain singled through the left side to double the Tornado lead.

Texas-Dallas, however, once again came back and put up four runs in the bottom half of the second. An Easterling single up the middle proved to be the biggest hit in the frame. After Burns and Guest hit RBI singles to tie the score at 4-all, Texas-Dallas pulled away by scoring three times in the fifth. Saxon started the run with an RBI single before the Comets added two more insurance runs on a throwing error by the Tornado shortop to go up 9-4 and never look back.

Chase Knight went the distance on the mound for Texas-Dallas (7-8). He gave up 10 hits and five runs, including four earned, while striking out six and not issuing a walk. Bobby Jones took the loss for Concordia and fell to 0-1 after giving up two runs that were each earned in the bottom of the second.

Concordia (7-10) visits Howard Payne for a three-game series next weekend, which begins with a 2 p.m. matinee on Friday, March 7.
