GAME TWO BOX SCORE
Austin, Texas – Senior pitcher
Ryan Ullmann hurled a one-hit shutout and fell one play shy of throwing a perfect game in leading the Concordia University Texas baseball team to a 2-0 victory over Mary Hardin-Baylor in the first game of a doubleheader on Friday, March 29 at Tornado Field. The Crusaders won the nightcap in seven innings by a 15-4 score to salvage the split.
Chance Leissner broke a scoreless tie and gave Concordia all the insurance it needed in the opener by blasting a two-run homer in the top of the sixth.
Casey Skalaban, who reached on a fielder's choice earlier in the frame, also scored on the play.
Ryan Ullmann, who was one of 10 seniors recognized for his contributions to the program after the game, picked up the victory for Concordia and improved his record to 3-3. He retired the first 16 batters he faced, only allowed one runner to reach base in the entire game and struck out nine while not issuing a walk. Mary Hardin-Baylor's Ian Ekery suffered the loss after giving up four hits and two runs, including two earned, over six innings of work.
In the nightcap, Mary Hardin-Baylor (13-14, ASC 6-6) jumped out to an 8-0 lead through the first two innings and never looked back. Drake Shukanes, Garrett Webb and Tyler Taute all drove in two runs with one swing of the bat during the stretch.
Concordia made an effort to chip away at the deficit and scored twice in the bottom of the fourth to make it 8-2 on RBI singles by Conner Bertsch and Leissner, but that was as close as the hosts would come. Shukanes plated Zack Whiddon in the top of the seventh before Sam VanHoozer retired the side in the bottom of the same frame to end the game due to the 10-run rule.
Scott Weinschenk suffered the loss for Concordia and fell to 4-4 on the year after surrendering five hits and five runs, which were all earned, over 1.1 frames. Mary Hardin-Baylor's Chance Ryan improved to 4-2 by picking up the victory. He gave up five hits and two runs while striking out one and not issuing a walk.
Concordia (15-17, ASC 7-5) visits Schreiner for a three-game series next weekend. The opener will take place on Friday, Apr. 5 at 2 p.m.
