Megan Wagenaar won the 800- and 1,500-meter runs for the second straight year and
Andrea Mitchell accumulated points in four different events to lead the Concordia University Texas women's track & field team to a third-place finish among six schools with 130.50 points at the American Southwest Conference Championships on Saturday, Apr. 27 at the HSU Track & Field Complex. The Tornados, who broke 10 school records in the 13 events they competed in, showed tremendous improvement by registering their highest finish and point total ever at the championship meet.
Wagenaar was among five Tornados to be named all-conference by winning both middle distance events. She finished the 800 in 2:16.82, which was a new program standard, and the 1,500 in 4:55.33. Pringle placed second in both events behind Wagenaar with marks of 2:22.47 and 5:02.79 to earn all-conference laurels as well.
Caitlin Rowlette, who won the steeplechase yesterday, was also named All-ASC after posting third-place marks of 5:07.38 and 20:07.04 in the 1,500- and 5,000-meter runs.
Mitchell became the first Tornado to be crowned ASC Freshman of the Year and was also an all-conference winner after most notably finishing in the runner-up position of the 100- and 200-meter dash events. She ran a school-record time of 12.21 seconds in the 100 and hit the tape with a mark of 25.18 in the 200.
Sydney Getfield rounded out the list of Tornados who garnered All-ASC laurels by registering third-place times of 12.57 and 25.58. She also tied for fourth in the high jump yesterday.
In addition, both the 4x100- and 4x400-meter relay teams ran record-breaking times at the championship meet. Mitchell,
Randi Askew, Pringle and Wagenaar finished first in the 4x400 with a mark of 4:04.38, while
Briana Cunningham, Getfield, Askew and Mitchell teamed up to navigate the track on the 4x100 relay in a time of 48.51.
The Tornados set two additional program standards in throwing events.
Princesse Mago was second in the shot put with a toss that sailed 38-feet, 3.25-inches, while
Cassie Dominguez was eighth in the discus throw by recording a mark of 104-6.
Texas Lutheran won its fourth straight crown by racking up 304 points. Texas-Tyler finished in the runner-up position with 154 points and was followed by Concordia (130.50), Hardin-Simmons (113.50), Mississippi College (56) and Sul Ross State (4).
Notes: Concordia has shown significant improvement at the American Southwest Conference Championships each year since its inaugural season of varsity competition in 2010 … The Tornados finished sixth in 2010 and 2011 by accumulating 11 and 34.50 points, respectively, before finishing fourth with 58 points in 2012 and third with 130.50 points today … A record six student-athletes –
