SEGUIN, Texas – Concordia University Texas won a pair of matches to open the 2013 season on Friday at the Bulldog Classic.
The Tornados (2-0) swept St. Joseph's-Long Island (0-1) in the opener and rallied for a four-set win over Texas Lutheran (0-1) in the nightcap.
The second victory of the day ended a 45-match losing streak to the Lady Bulldogs and was Concordia Texas' first win in the series against their former American Southwest Conference foe since Sept. 11, 1992.
"I'm very proud of the way our team performed today," first-year head coach Christy Clawson-Diver said. "Even though we lost the first set to Texas Lutheran, we battled back. It's important to have matches like this where you have to fight to win. We made some adjustments on the fly and that gave us confidence throughout the rest of the match."
Katie Baker and Alissa Johnson paced the Tornados in the first two matches. Both players amassed 18 kills and 17 digs against Concordia's two opponents.
The Tornados will conclude tournament play on Saturday with a pair of contests. Concordia will start the day with a 9 a.m. exhibition match against Houston Community College before playing a non-conference tilt with Texas-Tyler at 3 p.m.
