AUSTIN, Texas – The Concordia University Texas women's soccer team will continue its fall campaign with a pair of matches this week. The Tornados will host Houston-Victoria at 1 p.m. on Thursday at St. Stephen's Episcopal School and will travel to play American Southwest Conference (ASC) rival Mary Hardin-Baylor in a non-league match at 5 p.m. the following day.
Concordia Texas (1-2-2) is coming off a 3-2 loss in its last outing against Our Lady of the Lake last Friday. The Tornados fell behind 2-0 in the opening 10 minutes but stormed back to tie the match in the second half. However, the Saints found the game winner in the 53rd minute to clinch the contest.
Senior midfielder
Chastity Carrillo leads CTX with seven total points (2 goals/3 assists). The El Paso, Texas, native was involved in all four of Concordia's goals last week, scoring twice and assisting on the other two.
The Tornados' defense is tied for second in the ASC with two shutouts, both of which have come with freshman
Megan Frontiera in net. The Georgetown, Texas, native is averaging 6.8 saves per match (third in the league) and has stopped 82.9 percent of the opposition's attempts.
The Jaguars (3-4) snapped a four-match losing streak with a 4-0 victory over Schreiner last Saturday. Sheilat Akapo leads Houston-Victoria with eight goals, while Briana Holmes has handed out a team-high three assists. The Jaguars have allowed 20 goals (2.86 per game) and were outscored 18-4 in their four-game losing streak.
The Cru (5-0) have allowed only three goals this fall and have shut out three of their five opponents. Mary Hardin-Baylor is coming off a 7-0 win over Texas College on Tuesday night. Kathryn Parker and Ashley Teague each have netted five goals to lead the Cru with 10 total points apiece. Courtney Craig and Abbigail Minnix have combined to post a 0.60 goals against average, while making only 14 saves.
Thursday's match between Concordia and Houston-Victoria is only the second in the all-time series. The Jaguars won the only meeting with a 1-0 decision on Sept. 3, 2010 in Victoria.
Meanwhile, the Tornados and Mary Hardin-Baylor will be meeting for the 17th time on Friday evening. The Cru holds a 12-3-1 advantage in the all-time series, but Concordia has won the last three matchups, including a 2-1 win in double overtime on Oct. 5, 2012.
