SHERMAN, Texas – The Concordia University Texas volleyball team split a pair of five-set matches on the opening day of the 18th Annual Austin College Classic. The Tornados lost the opener to Wheaton (Ill.), but rallied to overcome Dallas in the nightcap.

Alissa Johnson paced Concordia Texas (3-2) with a pair of double-double efforts. The Mont Belvieu, Texas, native racked up 36 digs and 26 kills while leading the Tornados to a split.

Concordia will play Bacone at 11 a.m. on Saturday, before wrapping up tournament play against host Austin College at 3 p.m.


MATCH ONE
Concordia won the opening set against Wheaton, but the Thunder rallied to win three of the next four to hand the Tornados a five-set loss in the opening match.

CTX claimed the first frame, 25-17, but Wheaton (3-3) picked up a 25-17 victory of its own in the second panel to pull even. The Tornados regained the advantage with a 26-24 win in the third set. However, the Thunder posted a 25-16 win in the fourth frame and pulled away late for a 16-8 victory in the fifth game to claim the match.

Johnson rattled off a double-double of 15 digs and 11 kills, but it was not enough for Concordia which recorded eight service and five reception errors.

Shelby Knowles and Maddie McGinnis paced the Wheaton attack with 17 and 16 winners, respectively. Ashley Torok handed out 30 assists and collected 13 digs to complete her double-double effort.

MATCH TWO
Concordia rallied from a two-set deficit to knock off Dallas in five sets by scores of 27-29, 21-25, 25-21, 25-22, 15-9. The Tornados trailed 7-1 in the final frame, but reeled off a 14-2 run to close out the contest.

Johnson again led CTX with 15 winners and 21 digs. Zoë Allen and Sam Ladewig also recorded double-doubles. Allen posted a team-high 23 assists to go along with her 13 digs, while Ladewig handed out 20 helpers and collected 10 stops.

Dallas' Emily Capers tallied a double-double of 20 kills and 10 assists.
