Concordia Texas to host former conference foe Texas Lutheran on Wednesday

2/11/2014 6:30:00 PM

AUSTIN, Texas – Fresh off a three-game sweep of Southwestern last weekend, the Concordia University Texas baseball team will square off with former American Southwest Conference (ASC) foe Texas Lutheran on Wednesday at Tornado Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

The contest originally was scheduled to take place on Tuesday afternoon in Seguin. However, inclement weather forced the game to be moved a day later and a venue change also was agreed upon by Tornados head coach Tommy Boggs and Bulldogs skipper Greg Burnett.

Both squads received praise from voters in the two Division III preseason polls. Concordia Texas (3-0) picked up votes in the D3baseball.com Preseason Top 25, while Texas Lutheran (3-0) received tallies in the Collegiate Baseball Preseason Top 25.

The Tornados opened the 2014 campaign with a non-conference sweep at home last weekend. Concordia claimed a doubleheader last Saturday (11-2 and 10-5) and won the finale a day later in walk-off fashion (6-5). Senior outfielder Brent Schaekel, who scored the winning run in Sunday's contest, was named ASC Hitter of the Week for his performance in the series. The Tomball, Texas, native hit .400 (4-for-10) with a double and scored five runs. He also stole four bases and tied the program's all-time record with his 60th stolen base on Sunday.

The Tornados hit .308 in the season-opening series with two doubles, a pair of triples and 21 RBIs. Sophomore first baseman Connor Bertsch paced the club with five hits, while Schaekel and senior infielder Estevan Hernandez tallied four apiece.

Concordia's pitching staff picked up two of its three wins in relief last weekend. Junior right-hander Cameron Cox won the opener after fanning eight hitters and allowing only one earned run over 4.2 innings. Ty Bratton and Corey Holmes each picked up victories out of the bullpen, while Brandon Garwood earned a save in relief of Cox in the opener.

The Bulldogs swept a doubleheader from No. 11 Texas-Tyler last weekend in Seguin. Texas Lutheran also picked up a victory in the season opener against Chapman last Friday. TLU owns a .276 batting average with five doubles and two home runs through the first weekend. The Bulldogs pitching staff has limited opposing hitters to a .198 batting average and boasts a 2.16 ERA with 26 strikeouts.

Wednesday marks the 46th time the two teams have met since the Tornados moved to the Division III level in 2000. Texas Lutheran owns a 30-15 record since 2000, but CTX has won three of the last five meetings. Four of the last eight contests have required extra innings to determine a winner, including two of the three matchups last season in Seguin. The Bulldogs won the last meeting, a 6-0 decision at Katt-Isbel Field on April 20, 2013.
