PINEVILLE, La. – The Concordia University Texas baseball team scored seven runs in the fourth inning and collected a 12-7 victory over Louisiana College in the American Southwest Conference (ASC) series opener on Friday night at Wildcat Field.
The Tornados (7-1, 4-0 ASC) sent 12 batters to the plate and tallied four hits, including back-to-back run-scoring doubles by
Estevan Hernandez and
Garrett Benyo, in the deciding panel.
Concordia Texas had a 7-5 lead after four frames. CTX scored another run in the sixth, three in the seventh and one more in the eighth en route to their fourth consecutive win.
The Wildcats (1-6, 0-4 ASC) plated a pair of runs in the seventh, but were unable to do any other damage.
Hernandez went 4-for-6 at the plate with a double and two RBIs. Benyo was 3-for-5 with two doubles and two RBIs, while
Cameron Cox had a double and drove in three runs.
Scott Weinschenk (2-0) worked six-plus innings and gave up six runs (four earned) on eight hits to earn the win. The reigning ASC Pitcher of the Week also fanned nine for the second consecutive start.
Matt Scott led Louisiana College with three hits and he drove in a run.
Wildcats starter Miles Holley (0-2) was handed the loss after he allowed five runs on three hits over 3.1 stanzas. The righty also struck out five and walked four.
The set concludes with a 12 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday.
