SEGUIN, Texas – Zach Jacobs hit a walk-off single in the 10th inning to give Texas Lutheran a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over 11th-ranked Concordia University Texas on Tuesday afternoon at Katt-Isbel Field.
The Bulldogs (19-10) trailed by a run in the bottom of the ninth inning, but Tornados reliever
Corey Holmes uncorked a wild pitch with two outs that allowed Tony Gennusa to score and tie the ballgame.
An inning later, Texas Lutheran put its first three hitters on the bases before Jacobs hit a soft liner that landed behind the drawn in infielders and just past second base, which allowed Von Wendel to trot home with the winning run.
Concordia Texas (19-4) wasted a quality start from
Ragan Pope, who allowed only one run and three hits in 8.1 frames. The southpaw hit the first batter of the ninth, but he was retired at second base on a bunt attempt. Pope then was replaced on the mound by Holmes with a runner at first base.
The Tornados registered seven hits in the contest, but managed only one run in the fifth.
Estevan Hernandez drove in the lone score for CTX with a run-scoring single to center field, which plated
Colton Poindexter.
Christian DeBlanc logged 4.2 stanzas of scoreless relief work to keep the Bulldogs within a run. Thomas Harwell (2-2) earned the win after keeping the Tornados from scoring in the 10th.
Dillon Stavinoha (2-1) was saddled with the loss after allowing two hits and a run without recording an out in the final panel.
Concordia will return to league play this weekend, as it completes its road trip with a three-game series at Mississippi College. The set is scheduled to open with a 3 p.m. doubleheader on Friday at Frierson Field in Clinton, Miss.
