CLINTON, Miss. – Mississippi College swept a doubleheader from the 11th-ranked Concordia University Texas baseball team on Saturday at Frierson Field. The sweep allowed the Choctaws to claim the American Southwest Conference series, 2-1.
Mississippi College (14-12, 12-9 ASC) won the games by scores of 2-1 and 2-0. The second contest marked the first time this season that the Tornados (20-6, 16-4 ASC) had been shut out.
In the opening game, both teams were scoreless until the top of the sixth when
Trevor Harlos posted an RBI single, scoring
Connor Bertsch.
Cameron Cox retired the first two batters of the seventh, but Spencer Wilson reached on an infield single to prolong the frame. Cox then worked to an 0-2 count on Robbie Jernigan, but the right-handed hitter hit the glove of CTX catcher
Tyler Bain on the ensuing pitch. Jernigan, who reached on catcher's interference, pushed Wilson into scoring position. Trey Pirkle then followed with a bloop single to left field, which plated Wilson to tie the game at 1-1.
Three pitches later, Tate Ratcliff hit a grounder up the middle that was knocked down by
Jon Franz. Mississippi College waived around Jernigan from second and
Estevan Hernandez threw home to
Gareth Hutton, who took over for Bain behind the plate. Hutton caught the throw from Hernandez on the third-base side of the plate, but Jernigan slid past the tag to score the winning run.
Cox (5-2) allowed six hits and two runs, both unearned, while striking out five.
Blake Mcilwain (4-1) held the Tornados to a run on eight hits and struck out six in a complete-game effort.
The nightcap went scoreless until the eighth inning when Zach Evans hit a two-run homer to left field for the Choctaws.
Jayme Monroe (3-4) allowed only one hit and struck out six, while Blake Roberts picked up his third save of the spring after working a perfect ninth.
Brandon Garwood (0-2) gave up two runs in 1.2 innings out of the bullpen.
Concordia will return to Austin to host Schreiner in a non-conference tilt on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Tornado Field.
