AUSTIN, Texas – The top-seeded Concordia University Texas baseball team turned a triple play in the fourth inning en route to a 7-1 win over No. 2 seed LeTourneau on Saturday, and the Tornados forced the "if necessary" game of the American Southwest Conference Baseball Championship at Tornado Field.
The two teams will play the championship game at 1 p.m. Sunday. The winner will receive the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Championships.
Concordia Texas (31-13) turned a 5-4-3 triple play with a 3-0 lead in the fourth that ignited the home crowd. David Perkins hit a ground ball to
Kyle Rodriguez at third base. Rodriguez stepped on third and threw to second baseman
Estevan Hernandez, who then turned it over to first baseman
Connor Bertsch to complete the deed.
CTX received a gutty starting pitching performance from right-hander
Scott Weinschenk. On just two days rest after working 8.2 innings in the ASC Tournament opener, Weinschenk tossed seven innings and allowed only five hits and one run to receive the win. The Brenham native also struck out four to lift the Tornados to the championship game.
"It's hard to describe his performance," fifth-year head coach
Tommy Boggs said after the game. "It's a tribute to him. He deserves everything he gets in this game."
Weinschenk threw 93 more pitches, including 63 strikes, in the contest.
"I felt good, even when I was warming up," he said.
The only run he gave up was a solo home run to Perkins in the seventh inning, which prompted a visit from Boggs.
"When he came out, I said, 'No,' and started shaking my head," Weinschenk said. "He knew what I was talking about and he told me the next guy can't get on. I told him he wouldn't."
Boggs left him in, and the senior retired the next two batters, inducing a fly out before striking out Caleb Pritchett to end the frame.
"That is the first time I have ever had a kid talk me out of taking them out," Boggs said.
Weinschenk handed the ball over to
Cameron Cox for the final two stanzas. Cox worked around two singles, but held the YellowJackets (31-13) scoreless in both innings.
Concordia jumped out to a 3-0 advantage after scoring a run in each of the first three innings. Rodriguez had a run-scoring single in the first, while
Brent Schaekel drove in a run on his single in the second. The Tornados added a tally in the third after LeTourneau shortstop Bryce Griffin's errant throw to first base allowed Bertsch to score from second base.
After Perkins hit a homer in the top of the seventh, Concordia exploded for four runs in the bottom of the frame. Schaekel capped the scoring with a two-run single through the right side that scored
Colton Poindexter and
Ragan Pope.
The Tornados pounded out 11 hits on the day. Rodriguez and
Jon McManemin tallied three apiece, while Schaekel was 2-for-4 with three RBIs.
Jordan Price (5-3) suffered the loss after allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits over three innings.
Concordia has won three ASC Tournament titles, including back-to-back championships under Boggs in 2011 and '12, and will play for its fourth on Sunday. Former head coach Mike Gardner led the Tornados to the 2002 title en route to a trip to the NCAA Division III World Series.
