BELTON, Texas – The Concordia University Texas baseball team swept an American Southwest Conference (ASC) doubleheader from I-35 rival Mary Hardin-Baylor on Saturday at Red Murff Field. The Tornados won the opening contest, 9-8, and claimed the nightcap, 11-1 in five innings.
Concordia Texas (27-12, 21-10 ASC) also clinched the league's regular season championship and the top seed at next week's postseason tournament, which will be held from May 7-11 at Tornado Field. CTX won four West Division titles (2004, '08, '11 and '12) before the conference merged the two divisions this season.
The Tornados opened a 9-0 lead in the nightcap, which helped clinch the sweep. Concordia scored seven runs in the second inning, capped off by
Connor Bertsch's three-run homer.
Two panels later, CTX added two more on
Colton Poindexter's run-scoring double and
Chance Leissner's sacrifice fly.
After the Cru (25-15, 19-14 ASC) scratched across a run in the bottom of the fourth, Concordia put the contest out of reach with a pair of RBI singles by
Brandon Hollier and
Estevan Hernandez.
The 11 runs was plenty of support for
Cameron Cox (7-3), who went the distance and allowed only five hits and one run. The right-hander also fanned four.
Hernandez, Hollier and Poindexter each racked up two hits apiece, while Hollier drove in three runs and scored three more. Bertsch finished 1-for-3 with his third home run of the campaign and three RBIs.
In the opening contest, Concordia jumped out to an 8-1 lead. However, Mary Hardin-Baylor plated seven runs in the bottom of the sixth, which forced extra frames of the regularly scheduled seven-inning contest.
Garrett Benyo drove in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly in the ninth, which allowed
Race Mellman to score from third.
Corey Holmes (2-1) earned the win after tossing 3.2 scoreless stanzas out of the bullpen. The right-hander struck four, allowed four hits and picked off a runner.
The Cru out-hit the Tornados, 14-6.
Poindexter was 1-for-4 with a two-run homer to pace Concordia, while Chase Leissner was 1-for-1 with a double and two RBIs.
The Tornados will face eighth-seeded Texas-Tyler in the first round of the ASC Tournament at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 7.
