AUSTIN, Texas – Brandon Hollier hit a walk-off single to right field and Brent Schaekel scored from second base to give the No. 1-seeded Concordia University Texas baseball team a 5-4 victory over eighth-seeded Texas-Tyler in the opening round of the American Southwest Conference Baseball Championship Tournament at Tornado Field.

The Tornados (28-12) started the ninth inning on Schaekel's walk. He then advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Six pitches later, Hollier hit a liner that deflected off Garrett Nelson's glove at first base and in to right field. Schaekel was waived around from second and slid home safely ahead of the throw from right fielder Billy Lirely.

The Patriots (16-25) forced Hollier's heroics to take place after scoring two runs to tie the game in the top of the frame.

After Texas-Tyler put runners on the corners with two outs in the ninth, Corey Holmes was called in from the bullpen to relieve CTX starting pitcher Scott Weinschenk. The second pitch from Holmes was hit by Derek Smith off the wall in left field, plating both runners.

Weinschenk worked 8.2 innings, allowing six hits and four runs (two earned), but received a no-decision. The right-hander also struck out two and walked one.

Holmes (3-1) gave up the two-run double, but struck out the next hitter in his short relief appearance.

Concordia Texas fell behind after the Patriots scored in the first inning. Texas-Tyler added a second run in the fifth.

However, the Tornados responded in the bottom of the frame by scoring four times to take a two-run advantage.

Kyle Rodriguez led off the panel with a double to right center. He moved over to third on Tyler Bain's single, and then scored after Patriots starting pitcher Gunner Baker was called for a balk. Schaekel then reached on a bunt single, pushing Bain to third. Cole Calder followed with an RBI single and Hollier registered an RBI groundout.

Estevan Hernandez paced the Tornados with a 2-for-4 performance that included an RBI. Hollier finished 1-for-5 with two RBIs. Calder also drove in a run and stole a base.

Concordia will face No. 4 seed Mary Hardin-Baylor, which topped fifth-seeded Howard Payne 5-4 in 11 innings, at 4 p.m. Thursday.
