SEGUIN, Texas – Matthew Butler scored two goals, including the game-winner, to give the Concordia University Texas men's soccer team a 3-2 victory in double overtime over former American Southwest Conference foe Texas Lutheran on Monday at Gustafson Field.
Butler ended the contest in the 106th minute after being set up by a pair of passes before beating Bulldogs goalkeeper Jonathan Michael in a one-on-one situation.
Mark Kinyanjui started the break at midfield by passing the ball ahead to
Adrian Sanchez, who played Butler through toward the goal on one touch. Butler neatly placed the ball inside the left corner post with Michael charging from his line.
The Tornados (1-1), who knocked off Texas Lutheran (1-1) for the first time in nearly three years, finished the contest with only 10 players due to a red card near the end of regulation.
The Bulldogs took 22 shots, including 10 on target, while Concordia Texas attempted 12 shots, seven of which were on goal.
Nick Martin logged eight saves to pick up the win in net for CTX.
Meanwhile, his counterpart, Michael, stopped four shots.
The Tornados took an early lead in the eighth minute when
James Montalbo Jr. set up Butler's first goal.
Montalbo Jr. played Butler into space, and the Kent, Wash., native hit the ball off the near post and into the back of the net.
Twelve minutes later, Texas Lutheran answered after David Ching scored.
Concordia reclaimed the lead in the 25th minute when
Marshal Tucker curled in a free kick from 25 yards out that went past Michael's diving attempt.
Nathan Drouillard forced the contest to enter extra sessions.
The 6-foot-6 defender headed in a corner kick serving from Colin Nunley to tie the game at 2-2 in the 79th minute.
After the two squads played a scoreless first overtime period, Butler buried the game-winning goal six minutes into the second extra phase.
The Tornados will return to action at 2 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 5, when the team travels to play Dallas Christian.
