Tornados Split Final Day of Austin College Invite

SHERMAN, Texas -- The Concordia Texas volleyball split a pair of matches on the final day of the Austin College Invite.

In the first match against Willamette, the Tornados used a 14-6 run in the second set to go on to win the set 25-13, and the match 3-1.

Kelly Farina was named to the Austin College Invite All-Tournament team.

MATCH ONE—CTX d. Willamette. 3-1 (16-25, 25-13, 25-23, 25-20)

Concordia had a tough start to the game, dropping the first set. CTX found themselves down by one at 17-16, but then Willamette went on an 8-0 to close out the set.

In the second set, the Tornados jumped out to an early 6-3 lead, and then had a quick 6-0 run to make it 12-3. Concordia would go on to win the set as they only committed three errors in the whole set.

In the third set, freshman outside hitter Kelly Farina came up clutch, after being down 23-21, the Tornados went on a 4-0 run to win the frame, including back-to-back kills by Farina.

In the fourth set, Concordia fell behind 17-11 midway through the set, but the Tornados closed out the game with a 14-3 run, including kills by junior outside hitter Carly Custer, who had 18 kills in the match. Farina and freshman setter Lianne VanDyke both finished the match with double-doubles.

MATCH TWO—Austin College d. CTX. 3-1 (16-25, 25-16, 25-18, 25-16)

Concordia had 16 kills in the first set on the way to winning the set 25-16, hitting .231 from the floor, punctuated by a 10-3 run.

In the second set, Austin College bounced back and committed just four errors along with 14 kills. The 'Roos ended up running away with the set on a 15-6 run..

Custer and Farina both had another superb game, recording double-doubles, including 17 kills and 14 digs for Custer.

In the third set, the Tornados were neck-and-neck with Austin College at 15-15, but the 'Roos would go on a 10-3 run to close out the frame and grab the momentum right back. CTX would go on to drop the final set unable to recover from an 11-point decfict as Austin College went on a 9-2 finish the set 25-16 and win the match.

The Tornados continue their longest road trip of the season as they visit Hardin-Simmons in Abilene, Texas, at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.
