SEGUIN, Texas –
Genna Ellinwood,
Alexis Popovich and
Alejandra Rueda all advanced to the championship in their respective flights to highlight a solid day for the Concordia Texas women's tennis team Friday at the Doc Skogman Invitational.
Ellinwood and Rueda will face off for the Flight G Championship Saturday at 10:30 a.m. while Popovich will take on Texas Lutheran's MP Hubert for the Flight D crown.
In Flight G, Elllinwood, a junior from Pflugerville, Texas, took advantage of a first round bye before knocking off Madison Starr of TLU 6-0, 6-3.
Rueda, meanwhile, won her quarterfinal match without dropping a set to move on to the semifinals. In the semis, the sophomore out of Eagle Pass, Texas, won in straight sets once again 6-4, 6-0 to set up the all-CTX Flight G Championship match.
Popovich was phenomenal on the day for the Tornados as well. The 2018 Second Team All-ASC West selection won her first match of the day in thrilling fashion 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (4). Popovich, a senior from Austin, Texas, had another close call in her second matchup, knocking off Nathalie Wetherington of North Central Texas College 6-2, 6-7(4), 1-0 (7).
Camille Kempf and
Kaitlin Stevens also grabbed singles victories for CTX in their quarterfinal matchup before falling in the semis.
Kempf won her first matchup in Flight E 6-4, 6-1 before narrowly dropping the second match 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (6) while Stevens opened with a 2-6, 6-0, 1-0(7) win in Flight F and followed it up with a 6-3, 6-1 defeat.
Both Kempf and Stevens, along with
Leyla Martinez, will compete in the third place matches in their respective flights on Saturday.
Day two of the tournament begins Saturday at 8:00 a.m. as the Tornados will be guaranteed at least one singles championship.
