SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Concordia Texas women's tennis team competed in the opening matches of the ITA Southwest Regional on Friday on the campus of Trinity University.
The Tornados would compete in the singles flights in the morning.
Claire Austin and
Alexis Popovich would each shine in flight B, as both won their first two matches of the day to advance to the round of 16.
Austin would make quick work in her first match winning in straight sets, before having to battle in her second match of the day, winning 2-6, 6-4, 10-7.
Popovich would also win in straight sets in her first match, while in the second match, after splitting a pair of sets would put the match away with a 10-2 decision in the final set.
Leyla Martinez would pick up a straight-set win to begin the day, but faltered in the round of 32, 1-6, 4-6.
In flight C, CTX would perform well as Elania Evans won her two matches of the day to advance to the quarterfinals, while
Genna Ellinwood would recover from a loss in the first match by winning her second match with a 6-1, 6-2 decision to advance to the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket.
In the doubles matches, Martinez and Austin along with Popovich and Evans would compete in flight B, while Ellinwood and
Camille Kempf played in flight C.
Martinez and Austin won their round of 16 match easily with an 8-1 decision, but fall just short in their next match, losing 8-9 (4-7) in the quarterfinals.
Popovich and Evans, meanwhile, after dropping their first match, would respond with an 8-2 win in the consolation bracket of flight B to move on to the semifinals.
Finally, Ellinwood and Kempf lose their opening doubles match 9-7, but bounced back in the consolation side of flight C, winning their second match 8-3 to advance to the semifinals.
The Tornados will wrap up the ITA Southwest Regional on Saturday in San Antonio, Texas with the rest of matches in both singles and doubles flights to be played.
Popovich and Austin will take the courts at 9 a.m. for their singles round of 16 matches in flight B, while Ellinwood and Evans' quarterfinals flight C matches will begin at 8 a.m. The doubles matches for Popovich, Evans and Kempf, Ellinwood will be played in the afternoon.
