BOX SCORE AUSTIN, Texas –
Claire Austin and
Camille Kempf both picked up singles victories as the Concordia Texas women's tennis team dropped their season opener 6-3 Saturday against Schreiner at Riverplace Country Club.
Austin, a freshman from Dallas, and Kempf, a junior out of San Antonio, Texas, both won their matches in straight sets as the Tornados fell to 0-1 on the young campaign.
In the doubles matches to start the day, CTX picked up a thrilling victory thanks to the combination of Kempf and
Genna Ellinwood on line three. The match would go the distance, with the Tornados picking up an 8-7 (9-7) win to head into singles matches trailing 2-1.
Playing on line two singles, Austin made quick work in her win, defeating Katie Smith of the Moutaineers 6-4, 6-2.
Kempf, meanwhile, won her matchup 6-4, 6-3 while playing on line four.
Alexis Popovich, playing on line one for CTX, won the second set of her matchup but was unable to close it out as she fell 6-1, 3-6, 6-2.
The Tornados will return to the courts on Saturday, March 2 when they take on Texas Wesleyan at Arlington Tennis Center starting at 2:00 p.m.
