Tornados grab first win of season, beat Hendrix 7-2

BOX SCORE AUSTIN, Texas – The Concordia Texas women's tennis team picked up their first win of the 2019 season, defeating Hendrix Saturday at River Place Country Club.

The Tornados won two doubles matches and five singles matches on the day to move to 1-1 on the young season.

Starting off with doubles, CTX picked up dominant 8-2 wins from the combinations of Alexis Popovich and Elania Evans and Camille Kempf and Genna Ellinwood on lines two and three, respectively.

Playing on line one doubles, Leyla Martinez and Claire Austin dropped a close 8-7 (7-3) matchup to make the score 2-1 Tornados heading into singles play.

In singles, Popovich, a senior from Austin, Texas, was able to pick up a stellar comeback victory on line one 3-7, 6-1, 10-4.

Martinez, Kempf and Evans were all able to grab straight set wins for CTX on lines three, four and five respectively. Martinez, a senior out of Houston, won her matchup 6-0, 6-3,  Kempf, a junior from San Antonio, Texas, nabbed a 6-2, 6-0 victory and Evans, a freshman from Sugar Land, Texas, won 6-4, 6-3 to clinch the win for the Tornados.

Playing on line six, Ellinwood also won her singles match. The senior from Pflugerville, Texas, grabbed the lone set she played in the match 8-0.

The Tornados will return to action on Saturday, March 16 in Austin when they take on St. Mary's College (IN) at River Place Country Club at 9:00 a.m.
