ABILENE, Texas –
Cassandra Landeros-Cabrera and
Isabella Wiik teamed up and won the flight A doubles title as the Concordia Texas women's tennis team competed in the American Southwest Conference Fall Tournament on Saturday.
The tournament, hosted by McMurry, began on Friday and concluded its singles and doubles flights championship matches on Saturday.
Landeros-Cabrera, a freshman out of The Woodlands, Texas, competed in the flight A singles bracket, where she wrapped up a third place finish, winning her final match in a tiebreak, 7-5. Meanwhile, Wiik, the Katy, Texas native, split her first two matches in flight B singles before finishing the tournament on a high note and winning the third-place match 8-4.
The two Tornados would then compete together in the flight A doubles matches, winning their first two matches to earn a spot in the final. Facing Hardin-Simmons in the title match, Landeros-Cabrera and Wiik would hold off the Cowgirls to win the match 8-6.
Concordia Texas would perform well in their other flights as well, highlighted by
Rachel Sweitzer,
Kaitlin Stevens and
Alejandra Rueda in the singles bracket.
In flight D, Sweitzer would split her first two matches, including a come-from-behind 1-6, 7-6 (5), 10-7 win in her opener. In the third-place match, Sweitzer took care of business, defeating Schreiner's Marlee Daniel 8-3.
Stevens would also pick up a third place win for the Tornados. Playing in flight F, Stevens went 1-1 in her first two matches of the bracket, but finished strong as she won the third-place match 8-4 over East Texas Baptist's Maddi Davis.
Rueda, meanwhile, competing in the flight G bracket, won her first two matches to reach the title match, where she finished as the runner-up after falling 6-1, 6-2 to Hardin-Simmons' Priscilla Schimming.
The Tornados wrapped up the tournament with the rest of the doubles flights, including runner-up finishes in flight C and D.
Sweitzer, along with teammate
Natalia Goodman, competed in flight C. The duo would open with back-to-back wins to reach the final, where they came up short 8-5 to Hardin-Simmons.
Rueda and
Anitza Alanis, meanwhile, represented CTX in the flight D bracket, where they rolled in their first two matches, before falling in the title match 8-1.
Next, the Tornados will wrap up their fall season when they travel to Abilene, Texas for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regional on Sept. 20-22.
