ABILENE, Texas –
Rachel Sweitzer and
Natalia Goodman won both of their matches and advanced to the quarterfinals in flight B as the Concordia Texas women's tennis team wrapped up the first day of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regional on Friday.
The Tornados played the opening rounds of the singles and doubles flights, competing with the best teams in the region.
Sweitzer and Goodman highlighted CTX's performance in the singles matches as both reached the quarterfinals in the flight B bracket.
Sweitzer opened the day with a nail-biting 6-4, 6-4 win over Texas Lutheran's Baily Denton before pulling out a come-from-behind win over Hardin-Simmons' Hannah Vermillion, including a 10-4 win in the deciding set.
She will face Southwestern's Chandler Verba on Saturday, with a spot in the semifinals on the line.
Goodman, meanwhile, was dominate in her opening match, winning in straight sets 6-0, 6-1. In her second match of the day, Goodman also had to conjure up a comeback after dropping the first set.
She would rally and go on to win the final two sets 6-2, 10-8 to advance to the quarterfinals, where she will face East Texas Baptist's Maddi Davis on Saturday.
In flight A singles,
Claire Austin,
Cassandra Landeros-Cabrera and
Isabella Wiik represented the Tornados.
Austin dropped both of her matches on the day, while Landeros-Cabrera and Wiik opened the day with straight sets wins before falling in the next round.
Other singles matches included
Alejandra Rueda dropping her opening match in flight B before bouncing back in the consolation bracket with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Mary Hardin-Baylor's Reilly Fletcher to advance to the quarterfinals of the bracket.
In flight D,
Veronica Gutierrez reached the semifinals after earning a bye and winning her quarterfinal match 6-3, 6-2. On Saturday, she will face LeTourneau's Amber VanDuyn.
Anitza Alanis, meanwhile, won her opener in straight sets, but came up short in three sets to VanDuyn.
The day concluded with the doubles matches, where Austin and Stevens teamed up in flight B to win their two matches and move on to the quarterfinals of the bracket. Goodman, Sweitzer and Rueda, Alanis, meanwhile, each won their opening doubles matches before falling in the following matches.
Wiik and Landeros-Cabrera wrapped up the day for CTX, competing in flight A doubles, where they lost a heartbreaking 9-8 (7-4) decision.
The ITA Regional will continue on Saturday in Abilene, Texas with Sweitzer, Goodman, Rueda and Gutierrez all competing in their respective singles matches, while Austin and Stevens look to advance in the flight B doubles bracket.
