AUSTIN, Texas – The Concordia Texas volleyball team has won seven of their last eight matches to reach their fifth straight American Southwest Conference Tournament and prepare for a quarterfinal matchup against LeTourneau on Thursday at the Mayborn Campus Center.
The Tornados, who at one point were 1-5 in conference play back on Sept. 24, regrouped and had a second half surge thanks in part to a seven-game win streak.
Concordia Texas finished the season 10-14, 10-8 ASC, earning the sixth seed in the conference standings and will be making their fifth consecutive ASC Tournament appearance.
The team will turn their attention to the three-seeded YellowJackets of LeTourneau in a quarterfinal matchup. First serve is set for Thursday at 7:30 p.m. on the campus of host site Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton, Texas.
Head Coach Nicole Dalby, who is in her eighth season at the helm, knows her team is capable of being successful in the conference tournament.
"The team is ready to make a push in the conference tournament," Dalby said. "We have had to overcome so much this season, and we have started to play really well during the second half of conference. The team has gained some confidence going into the tournament and I am excited to see them compete together."
The Tornados will be meeting the YellowJackets for the third time this season after the teams split the two-game series during the regular season.
In their most recent matchup, CTX bounced back from an opening set loss to win the next three frames and roll to a 3-1 victory at home, led by the play of
Kylexus Block who tallied a game-high 21 kills.
The Tornados will rely on a trio of veterans in Block, along with
Sarah Ghormley and
Alyssa Legette, to make a run in the tournament.
All three players were integral to CTX's success throughout the season and were recognized by the conference as each were named to the ASC All-Conference Teams.
Ghormley led the conference in kills in ASC play, racking up 246 kills in 63 sets played and was second among conference leaders in kills per set with a 3.90 average earning ASC All-Conference First Team accolades. In their last contest against LETU, Ghormley recorded a double-double with 12 kills and a team-high 14 digs.
Block has been another dangerous offensive weapon for the Tornados all year, finishing second on the team in kills with 301 and averaging 3.42 per frame. Defensively, Block has been impressive as well, totaling a team-high 262 digs. On Wednesday, she was named an ASC All-Conference Second Team selection.
Meanwhile, Legette did it all for CTX, dishing out a team-high 633 assists, which ranked second among ASC leaders, as well as, 189 digs on the defensive side of the ball, earning her ASC All-Conference Second Team honors.
In the win over the YellowJackets, Legette recorded a game-high 36 assists and added 13 digs.
Dalby knows LETU is a capable opponent that will be a tough task in the quarterfinal round, but believes her team is ready for the moment.
"This is a great match up for us," Dalby said. "Both matches with LeTourneau have been a battle this season so I am looking forward to watching our team compete against them. LeTourneau does a good job of frustrating their opponents defensively so we will have to limit our unforced errors."
The Tornados will take on the YellowJackets on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. inside the Mayborn Campus Center in Belton, Texas. The winner will advance to the semifinals for a showdown with two-seeded UT Dallas.
