Tornados have strong showing at UT Tyler Icebreaker Classic

TYLER, Texas – The Concordia Texas Track and Field team competed with DII, DIII and NAIA schools at the UT Tyler Icebreaker Classic, where the team set 18 personal records on Saturday.

The Tornados, performing in their third meet of the season, saw improvement from its newcomers on both the men's and women's teams.

For the men's team, they witnessed 14 personal-best performances on the day.

In the 110m hurdles, Brett Jackson was the top Tornado in the event running a time of 15.59 to secure a fourth-place finish, while Terrance Pellerin and Armando Lopez set PRs in the event's prelims with times of 15.62 and 18.41, respectively.

In the 400m hurdles, CTX had another top-five individual finisher as Preston Perkins took fourth in the event with a PR time of 57.54. His teammate Lopez also set a PR in the event, taking sixth with a time of 59.00.

The Tornados had six runners in the 400m dash with four of them setting personal best times.

Tevin Smith led the way, finishing with the sixth best collegiate time in the event at 51.82, a PR for the Austin, Texas native. Brant Byers was close behind, also recording a PR time of 52.05 to finish eighth among the collegiate runners. Jorge Garcia and Michael Williams set personal-bests in the event as well, finishing with times of 53.14 and 53.40, respectively.

Smith also had a strong performance in the 200m dash along with Jackson and Williams. Smith had the top time among DIII runners, placing 14th overall with a time of 23.48. Jackson and Williams, meanwhile, set PRs in the race, finishing in time of 23.92 and 24.51, respectively.

Tristan Yates and Daniel Bizima also had PR-setting days in their respective events.

Yates was the top runner for CTX in the 100m dash, finishing with a personal-best time of 11.64, while in 800m, Bizima registered the best time by a Tornado in the event, running a PR time of 2:03.80.

In the field events, Matthew Gregory, Alejandro Salazar and Travion Walker shined for CTX.

Gregory was the top DIII thrower in the shot put, finishing sixth overall after throwing for a PR distance of 12.84m. Walker, meanwhile, set a PR in discus, placing sixth among DIII competitors with a mark of 28.64m. Salazar wrapped up the Tornados' top performances with a top-five placement in javelin, registering a distance of 52.80m.

On the women's side, Reanna New, Kendall Boutte, Bianca Bagwell and Sophia West had PR performances.

For the third meet in a row, New broke her personal-best time in the 100m dash, registering a time of 12.96, and finishing 15th overall and fourth among DIII competitors. Boutte also had a PR in the event, recording a time of 16.14.

In the 1,500m run, Bagwell bested her time from last week, finishing the race with a time of 5:27.40, while teammate Sophia West also had a PR in the event with a mark of 6:04.59.

Bayli Luke, meanwhile, the program's record holder in the 400m dash, took fifth in the event after running a time of 59.51, first among DIII runners.

Paighton Corley also stood out on the track as she took fourth in the 400m hurdles race, recording a time of 1:09.49.

In the field events, Anayah Anderson took sixth in the triple jump with a distance of 10.00m. It is third straight meet Anderson has recorded a top-six placement in the event.

Meanwhile, in javelin, Kendall Simpson nearly set a PR as she threw for a distance of 31.40m and placed seventh overall.

Next, the Tornados will travel to Abilene, Texas for the Wes Kittley Invitational, which will be hosted by Abilene Christian from March 18-20.
