Gregory shatters shot put record, Tornados compete in East Texas Invitational

COMMERCE, Texas – Matthew Gregory, who set the program record in the shot put just two weeks ago, bested his own record and set a new program mark in the event as the Concordia Texas track and field team competed in the East Texas Invitational at Memorial stadium on Saturday.
 
Gregory tossed a record-setting 13.71m two weeks ago at the Bobcat Invitational, but the thrower shattered this record on Saturday with an impressive 14.74m throw, placing fourth in the event.  
 
Paighton Corley was the top performer on the women's side, pulling top-10 finishes in three events on the day.
 
Corley's first top-10 performance came in the 100m hurdles, where she placed eighth with a time of 17.28. Next, she earned a third-place finish in the 400m hurdles after running a 1:09.63, and finally, she threw a personal-best 26.45m in the javelin.
 
As a team, the Tornados' men and women both ended the day in eighth place.
 
On the men's side, two Tornados notched top-10 finishes in the 110m hurdles as Brett Jackson placed seventh with a time of 16.01 and Terrance Pellerin followed in eighth place with a time of 16.12. Armando Lopez set a new personal record in the event, finishing in 11th place with a time of 16.91.
 
Jackson also clocked in at 23.76 in the 200m, passing his previous best of 23.92.
 
A pair of Tornados also broke personal records and ran to top-10 finishes in the 400m hurdles.
 
First, Preston Perkins secured a sixth-place finish with a time of 56.37, and Brevin Robles ran a 58.22, finishing in ninth place.  
 
Miguel Morales also bested a personal record, registering a 4:53.21 in the 1,500m and blowing away his previous best of 5:01.91 set at the Trinity Invitational on March 6, and Cristian Jimenez set a new personal best in the 400m by running a 53.92.
 
Jacob Ismir, who shattered the men's 3000m Steeplechase program record when he recorded a time of 10:27.49 on March 26 at the Bobcat Invitational, secured a sixth place finish in the event with a time of 10:49.61. Rick Platas also broke a personal record of his own, running a 16:12.93 in the 5000m run.
 
Travion Walker set a new personal record with a toss of 29.53m in the discus throw, and he and Ravon Davis-Conway both recorded top-10 finishes in the triple jump. Davis-Conway placed second with a jump of 13.96m, and Walker finished in eighth by jumping 12.16m.
 
A duo of Tornados turned in top-10 performances in the javelin throw as Alejandro Salazar placed third with a distance of 45.47m and Dylan Day recorded a personal record of 38.47, good for a sixth-place finish. 
 
Matthew Walker was the next Tornado to set a personal best, throwing 14.74m in the shot put.
 
On the women's side, the Tornados turned in a plethora of impressive performances, starting with a ninth-place finish in the 100m from Raenna New with a time of 12.70.
 
Janiya Laikram set a new benchmark in the 100m hurdles with a time of 23.78, eclipsing her previous best of 25.66, and Kendall Boutte tied her personal record of 1:24.36 in the 400m hurdles, good for a seventh-place finish.
 
Bayli Luke ran to a fourth-place finish in the 400m with a time of 59.54, just a few ticks away from her personal best, and Kendall Boutte finished sixth in the 400m hurdles with a new personal best of 1:21.1.
 
In the 1500m run, Bianca Bagwell turned in a ninth-place finish with a personal-best time of 5:23.43.
 
A pair of Tornado throwers, Stefanie Saenz and Kendall Simpson, notched top-10 finishes on the day.
 
Saenz finished in sixth in the hammer throw with a distance of 27.05m and eighth in the shot put with a distance of 10.29m, and Simpson threw 29.99m in the javelin for a fourth-place finish. Sophia West competed in the javelin as well, besting her previous personal record with a distance of 14.42m.
 
In the jumping events, Sadie Ingram placed sixth in the long jump with a jump of 4.29m and 12th in the high jump with a height of 1.40m.
 
Next, Concordia Texas will set their sights on the War Hawks Classic in Abilene, Texas on Saturday.
