ABILENE, Texas – For the third straight meet,
Matthew Gregory broke the school's shot put record, throwing a distance of 14.86m to smash his own personal mark and finish second as the Concordia Texas Track and Field team competed in War Hawks Classic on Saturday.
The Tornados performed in their last meet of the season before heading to the American Southwest Conference Championships, recording 17 total top-five finishes between the men's and women's teams.
On the men's side, Gregory had a pair of top-five finishes on the day in the field events, highlighted by his showing in the shot put.
The El Paso, Texas native, who set the school record in shot put last week at the East Texas Invitational, bested his own throw once again, tossing for a distance of 14.86m in the event to place second in the event. Teammate
Alejandro Salazar also had a strong performance in the event, setting a PR throw of 9.44m for 12th.
Gregory's shot put mark currently ranks 35th in all of DIII. He also had another top-five in the field events, taking fifth in discus, throwing a personal record distance of 36.71m.
The men's team finished the meet with a pair of wins as well, taking top of the podium in the 110m hurdles and the triple jump.
Three Tornados set PRs in the 110m hurdles race, led by
Brett Jackson, who finished first overall with a time of 15.39. He was followed by
Terrance Pellerin and
Armando Lopez, who both ran personal-best times of 15.41 and 16.49, respectively.
Meanwhile, Ravon Davis Conway registered his second win and sixth top-two finish in the triple jump this season, winning the event with a jump of 14.08m.
Travion Walker placed fifth as well, reaching a PR distance of 12.81m.
Back on the track, CTX had several PR performances.
In the 400m hurdles, Preston Perkins ran a career-best time, finishing third overall with a mark of 56.60, while
Rick Platas, in the 1,500m run, set a PR time of 4:25.44 for 15th.
In the 400m dash,
Tevin Smith was the top runner for the Tornados, placing eighth with a time of 51.49, while Salazar notched a PR in the event with a time of 55.83.
Jacob Ismir, who set the 3000m steeplechase school record earlier this season, finished second in the event with a time of 10:29.98.
Salazar rounded out the men's team's performances, registering a third place finish in the javelin after throwing a distance of 45.60m. It is Salazar's seventh top-five finish in the event this year.
Concordia Texas as a team took third in the team standings, accumulating 76 total points in the meet.
On the women's side, the Tornados continued the theme of top-five performances, recording seven on the day.
Bayli Luke and
Kendall Simpson led the way, as the finished atop the field in their respective events.
Luke took first in the 400m dash after crossing the finish line with a time of 59.37. It is her fourth top-five finish of the season in the event.
Meanwhile, Simpson, cleared a season-best height of 2.44m to win the pole vault event.
Simpson also had a strong showing in the javelin, where she finished second with a throw of 29.50, while teammate
Sadie Ingram placed fifth after recording a distance of 23.09m.
Ingram grabbed a top-three finish in the high jump as well, clearing the bar height of 1.42m, which was good enough for third.
Back on the track,
Paighton Corley placed fifth in the 100m hurdles, running a time of 17.19.
Kendall Boutte crossed the finish line in a personal-best time of 19.55 and finished sixth overall.
Boutte also had a top-five placement in the 400m hurdles, finishing the race in a time of 1:22.68 for fourth place.
In the long jump, Corley set a PR with a distance of 4.83m and finished seventh, while Ingram jumped a season-best distance of 4.57m and placed 11
th in the event.
Anayah Anderson wrapped up the Tornados' highlights with a top-five finish in the triple jump, recording a distance of 10.33m. It is her third top-five finish in the event this season.
As a team, CTX placed third in the team standing, tallying 66 points.
The Tornados will next prepare for the conference championships meet, which will kick off on April 29-May1 on the campus of Belhaven in Jackson, Miss.
