RICHARDSON, Texas – The Concordia Texas women's tennis team, entering the year with three straight conference tournament appearances, was picked to finish second in the American Southwest Conference West Division as the league released its preseason poll and players to watch list.
 
The Tornados finished 7-5 in the 2021 season, winning three of their last four matches down the stretch of the regular season to earn the second seed in the west division.
 
The league's preseason poll, which is voted on by the coaches and sports information directors around the ASC, tabbed CTX as the second-place team in the west division with 49 total points.
 
Hardin-Simmons sat atop the west division in the poll, totaling 65 points and 10 first place votes, and reigning ASC champion UT Dallas was the top selection in the east division with 55 points and 11 first place votes.
 
A pair of newcomers, Kayla Pena and Trinity Klamecki, represented the Tornados on the ASC Players to Watch List after a strong showing in the fall tournaments.
 
Pena, a freshman out of Rio Grande City, Texas, played to a 2-1 singles record in the fall, rolling past HSU's Lauren Shaeffer and LETU's Madison Morris in the Cowgirl Classic. She also won three doubles matches with three different partners in the Cowgirl Classic.
 
Klamecki joined the Tornados as a transfer from Ottawa and picked up a win in her debut, taking down LETU's Mimi Sadmi in straight sets by a score of 6-2, 6-2.
 
Concordia Texas will return to action on Feb. 4, opening their season with a non-conference bout against UT-Rio Grande Valley. The Tornados will kick off their spring schedule at Austin Tennis Center in Austin, Texas at 9 a.m.
