Track & Field Wins Nine Events in the Season Opener

Mattison Stayrook & Jake Land both claimed two individual titles at the CenTex Invitational.

GEORGETOWN, Texas - The Concordia Texas track & field program kicked off the 2024 campaign in style at Southwestern University. The Tornados won nine events overall, while Mattison Stayrook & Jacob Land both claimed two individual titles at the CenTex Invitational.

For the women's team, Stayrook won the women's 200m race (27.46) and the javelin throw (32.83m). Stayrook tallied another podium finish with a 4.55m long jump for a second-place finish, which was only .14m from first. Making their debut with a time of 4:44.98 was the women's 4x400m relay team that consisted of Stayrook, Mackenzie Dixon, Ashley Rivera and Cachelle Flores. 

Also, cracking the top three in events for the women were Cachelle Flores, Kimora Roberson and Rae Kimble. Flores clocked in at 2:44.9 in the 800m. Roberson placed second with a shotput toss of 9.02m and third with a discus throw of 23.01m. Kimble finished right behind Roberson in the shotput with a throw of 8.50m, which was good for third place in the event. Aiyana Ephraim just barely missed a bronze finish with a javelin throw of 30.05m.

In the men's competitions, Alejandro Salazar continued his dominance in the javelin throw at 47.06,  good for first place. Jake Land won the 100m (11.01) and the 200m (22.00) to lead the way for the Tornados. He was also a member of the 4x100m relay team (Chance Miller, Lebryant Duck, Cristian Jimenez & Land) that paced the field with a time of 44.01. The Tornados were not done dominating the relays as their 4x400 team (Jimenez, Duck, Samuel De La Garza & Colin Gomez) also placed first by over seven seconds at 3:40.13.

In the individual track races for the men, long distance runner Thomas Hughes won the 5k by pacing the field at 16:19.84. Sophomore Aaron Ramos was not far behind him as he came in third with a time of 16:36.05 in the event. Cristian Jimenez (53.63), Lebryant Duck (54.33) and Cory Lewis (58.78) all finished at the top of the order in the 400m race. 

Dion Arriaga impressed in his debut with a second-place finish in the 1500m (4:36.14). Colin Gomez was the team's lone hurdler and set new goals to beat as he ran the 110m hurdles in 16.01 seconds and the 400m hurdles in 1:05.94. Chance Miller showed well in a loaded 200m field with a time of 22.90 for a third-place finish. 

In field competitions, freshman Isaac Sanchez posted numbers of 9.77m in the shot put and 28.87m in the discus. Fellow freshman Cory Lewis looked good in the discus toss with a throw of 29.88m.

Concordia Texas will now have two weeks to prepare for the Trinity Invitational in San Antonio on March 1-2.
