Valdez Wins 5000m, Tornados Post Multiple PRs at 92nd PVU Relays

Valdez earned his first collegiate win in the 5000m race.

HOUSTON, Texas - The Concordia Texas Track & Field program turned in a strong showing at the 92nd PVU Relays, hosted by Prairie View A&M University, highlighted by a first-place finish and a wave of personal-best/season-best performances across the roster.

Leading the way for the Tornados, Samuel Valdez captured the men's 5,000-meter title, crossing the line in 17:14.92 to secure the lone victory of the meet for Concordia. The performance also marked a season-best for the senior and set the tone for a productive weekend on the track.

In the field, Nick Anderson delivered a podium finish in the high jump, clearing 1.93 meters (6-4) to place third overall. Teammate Sean Ray Makolo added a personal-best clearance of 1.78 meters in the same event, while also recording a PR in the 400 meters with a time of 54.41.

The distance group saw multiple breakthroughs, led by Isaias Mendoza, who posted a personal-best 4:09.23 in the 1,500 meters. Damon Vasquez (4:18.92) and Hector Gutierrez (4:28.76) also turned in PR performances in the event. Gutierrez later added a season-best mark in the 800 meters (2:12.56), while Skye Wardlay (2:46.63) and Ashley Ramirez (3:11.13) each recorded personal bests in the women's 800.

On the sprint side, Malaya Thomas highlighted the group with a personal-best 25.48 in the 200 meters, while Laeticia Lukusa notched PRs in both the 100 meters (13.51) and 200 meters (27.29). Derrick Leonard also added a personal-best in the 100 meters with a time of 11.58.

In the hurdles, Jaiden Gonzales clocked a personal-best 58.62 in the 400-meter hurdles, continuing a strong season of improvement.

Field event standouts included Mya Tumer, who recorded a personal-best mark of 4.41 meters in the long jump, Kevin Stein with a PR throw of 25.31 meters in the discus, and Ciena Robinson, who added a personal-best mark of 9.26 meters in the shot put. Samuel Stewart also recorded a personal-best throw of 10.35 meters in the shot put to round out the Tornados' top performances in the field.

Concordia Texas will next head to San Marcos, Texas to compete in the Bobcat Invitational. The meet, hosted by Texas State, will be this Thursday, April 2nd.
