Tornados Topple Hilltoppers 98-91

Senior forwards #Brad Walker# and #Reza Farahani# led the Concordia University Texas men's basketball team to a 98-91 win over cross-town foe St. Edward's University on Tuesday evening in non-conference action.  Overall, six Tornados (1-1) scored in double digits in the win.

Farahani poured in 18 points to lead the Tornados' offensive output, including 9-of-10 shooting from the free throw line.  Walker recorded a double-double after netting 16 points and grabbing a game-high 10 rebounds.  Walker added four steals and three blocked shots in a winning effort.

The Tornados shot 59.3% from the floor (32-of-54), the second best shooting percentage in the program's history, which included the squad nailing 68.4% (13-of-19) of its shots in the second half.  CTX broke a school and American Southwest Conference record by shooting 80% from beyond the three-point line (12-of-15) in the contest.

Concordia Texas led by as much as 19 points in the first half and went into halftime leading 50-35.  In the second half, St. Edward's (0-4) chipped into the Tornados lead for the first nine-and-a-half minutes before tying the contest (70-70) with 10:32 to play.  The Hilltoppers claimed their first lead of the second half as Jeff Samuels knocked down a three-pointer (73-70).  The next eight minutes saw six ties and 10 lead changes before the Tornados finally regained control of the game.

Tied at 91-91, CTX guard #Jon Hutton# hit the front end of a two-shot foul giving the Tornados a lead they would not relinquish.  Hutton added a layup with :21 left in the game.  Seven seconds later, Hutton stole the ball from Jeff Miner and was fouled.  Hutton hit both free throws, which stretched CTX's lead to 96-91.

Farahani buried a pair of free throws with :02 remaining to cap off the victory.

Sophomore guard #Kenny Williams# missed a double-double by one assist after scoring 15 points and handing out nine assists.  Freshman guard #Nick Haynes# chipped in 15 points, while freshman guard #Larry Durand# scored 12 points.  Hutton added 10 points for CTX, all of which came in the second half.

With the win, the Tornados snapped a four-game losing streak to the Hilltoppers.

The Tornados now turn their attention to the American Southwest Conference as they travel to Clarksville, Ark., for their conference opener versus the University of the Ozarks on Sat., Nov. 28 at 7:30 p.m.  The ASC opener will be broadcast live on the Tornados Sports Radio Network.
