AUSTIN, Texas -- LeTourneau University used the strength of a big second half offensive to move past the Concordia University Texas men's basketball team, 80-68, Saturday evening at Concordia Fieldhouse.
The Tornados (1-4, 0-3 ASC), which trailed by four points at the half, were unable to withstand a late run by the Yellow Jackets (2-4, 2-2 ASC) in the second half. LeTourneau shot 65.6% (21-of-32) from the floor and forced 17 CTX turnovers in the second half.
The Tornados held a one-point lead (47-46) with 13:12 remaining in the game when LeTourneau went on a 16-6 run over the next five minutes to claim a 62-53 lead. The Tornados would go scoreless for the next two minutes as LeTourneau pushed the lead to double digits (66-53). Senior guard #Brian Elarms# would bring the Tornados within 11 points (55-66) as he slashed through the lane for a layup. The Yellow Jackets would put the game out of reach as JJ Rockmore, Will Smith and Dale Vanwright all hit consecutive layups give LeTourneau a 17-point lead (72-55).
LeTourneau would close out the game by outscoring CTX 8-5 over the final five minutes of action and go on to the 80-68 win.
Dale Vanwright paced the Yellow Jackets with his second straight 29-point game. Concordia received 18 points from senior forward #Reza Farahani# and 13 from senior forward #Brad Walker#. The Tornados committed 30 turnovers in the contest and forced LeTourneau to commit 31. CTX shot at a .385 clip (25-of-65) from the floor, which included shooting only 28.6% (4-of-14) from beyond the arc.
The Tornados will return to action on Monday, Dec. 7, as East Texas Baptist University visits Concordia Fieldhouse in a 7:30 p.m. start.
