AUSTIN, Texas -- Junior guard #Jon Hutton# hit a runner outside the lane with 0.7 seconds remaining to give the Concordia University Texas men's basketball team a 75-73 win over East Texas Baptist University on Monday evening at Concordia Fieldhouse.
Hutton received a pass from #Kenny Williams# on the left wing with under five seconds left. He then began to dribble between a double-team and his shot went up and off the backboard as time stopped with under one second left.
The Tigers (2-3, 1-3 ASC) had one final try but their three-quarter-court shot came up short giving the Tornados (2-4, 1-3 ASC) their first conference win and snapping a three-game losing streak.
Trailing by seven points (62-55) with 9:20 remaining in the game, CTX went on a 10-3 run to tie the game (65-65) after senior forward #Brad Walker# buried two free throws. Following a jumper by James Morman, senior forward #Reza Farahani# answered with a three-pointer, which gave CTX a 68-67 lead.
After trading buckets, ETBU hit two consecutive free throws giving the Tigers a one-point advantage (71-70) with 2:36 left in the game. Concordia quickly climbed back ahead as freshman guard #Larry Durand# knocked down a three-point shot from the corner (73-71).
Both teams were unsuccessful in scoring on the next few possessions until Chris Santiago hit a jumper with only 30 seconds remaining tying the contest at 73-73, which set up Hutton's heroic shot.
Farahani led all scorers with 23 points for Concordia. Walker netted 17, while Williams added 10. Senior guard #Brian Elarms# scored six points and grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds off the bench for CTX. Hutton scored only four points on the night and had just one made field goal.
The Tornados shot 38.6% (27-of-70) from the floor, including 35.5% (11-of-31) from beyond the three-point line. CTX hit nine three-pointers in the second half.
Concordia will host Mary Hardin-Baylor on Thursday, Dec. 10 at 7:30 p.m. in Concordia Fieldhouse.
