AUSTIN, Texas --The hot shooting hands of the Concordia University Texas men's basketball team helped the Tornados (8-7, 6-5 ASC) to a 101-92 win over Sul Ross State on Saturday afternoon at Concordia Fieldhouse. CTX blistered the nets all night long, shooting 58.5% (38-of-65) from the field.
The field was not the only place Concordia's players had hot hands from on Saturday. The Tornados shot 81% (17-of-21) from the free throw line and 47.1% (8-of-17) from behind the three-point line. Sul Ross State (5-10, 4-7 ASC) was almost as impressive with its shooting performance. The Lobos hit 50.8% (33-of-65) of their shots on the day.
The Tornados led 74-64 with 11:54 left in the second half and started to stretch out the lead. Over the next five minutes CTX went on a 15-6 run, which extended the lead to 19 (89-70). With 4:43 left in the contest, Concordia would still be leading by 19 (93-74), but the Lobos began to chip away. Sul Ross State used the strength of a 16-5 run to pull within eight (98-90). However, the Tornados would seal up the win with two free throws in the final 40 seconds of play.
CTX led by six points at the half (51-45), but at one time during the first half held a 12-point lead (42-30).
Senior forward #Brad Walker# posted a game-high 23 points. Senior guard #Brian Elarms# poured in a career-best 15 points, while senior forward #Reza Farahani# chipped in 14. Junior guard #Justin Reefer# led all players with a game-high 11 rebounds.
Steven Johunkin posted a team-best 21 points for the Lobos.
The Tornados will return to action in a road contest at Schreiner University on Thursday, Jan. 21 in Kerrville. Tip time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
