CTX Escapes UT Tyler with 67-65 Win to Ring in New Year

TYLER, Texas --
#Brian Elarms# stole the basketball away from the University of Texas-Tyler with 21 seconds left in the contest before sinking two free throws which secured a 67-65 win for the Concordia University Texas men's basketball team at the Herrington Patriot Center on Sunday evening.

Elarms knocked the ball out of the hands of Dexter McMarion before retrieving the loose ball just past half court.  Elarms then raced to the other end of the floor before being fouled by UT Tyler's (7-4, 3-3 American Southwest Conference) Michael Johnson.

Johnson missed a final three-point attempt for the Patriots that fell short and #Larry Durand# came away with the rebound for Concordia (4-6, 2-4 ASC) to seal the win.

The Tornados, who held a 37-27 lead at halftime, dominated the first half of play.  CTX led by as much as 14 in the first half.

A three-pointer from Johnson tied the game, 55-55, with 4:52 left in the second half.  UT Tyler used the strength of a 10-6 run to claim a 65-61 lead with 1:29 left.  #Brad Walker# pulled the Tornados within two after hitting a jumper and #Kenny Williams# tied the game with a jumper of his own with 40 seconds left in the contest.

Walker led CTX's offensive effort by scoring 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the floor and 5-of-6 from the free throw line.  Williams poured in 18 for the Tornados and Elarms tallied 11.  #Justin Reefer# grabbed a team-high five rebounds in his first game of the season.

Hakeem Kareem led the Patriots with 18 points.  Johnson chipped in 15.

The Tornados return to action on Thursday, Jan. 7, versus Mississippi College at Concordia Fieldhouse.  Tip time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and the game will be carried live on the Tornados Sports Radio Network.
