Austin, Texas – The Concordia University Texas men's basketball team will look to continue building momentum before American Southwest Conference play starts when it visits crosstown-rival St. Edward's on Monday, Nov. 22 at 8 p.m. Fans can also follow the game through a live webcast.
Concordia (1-0), which was predicted to finish second in the American Southwest Conference West Division, earned a convincing 99-71 victory over Southwestern on Friday evening at the Concordia Field House. It marked the first time in seven tries that the program won its opener under the direction of head coach
Stan Bonewitz.
The Tornados, who scored 41 points by forcing the Pirates to commit 37 turnovers in Friday night's battle, have relied on a balanced scoring attack and a tenacious defense to find success in the early going.
Greg Brown, a junior guard, led five Concordia players in double figures with 15 points off the bench against the Pirates, while sophomore point guard
Tayler Jacobs recorded 12 points and a game-high six assists while only committing two turnovers. Newcomer
Gregston Westry, a transfer from St. Edward's, added 13 points and three steals.
St. Edward's (2-1), which was tabbed fifth in the Heartland Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll, will attempt to bounce back after most recently dropping a 76-57 decision to Texas A&M-Commerce on Saturday. Forward Remy Boswell and Shimeek Johnson have led the team so far by scoring at a 16.0 and 10.0 clip, respectively, while both players also average 8.3 boards per game. St. Edward's, which earned its victories over Huston-Tillotson and Texas A&M-Kingsville, has also gotten strong contributions from guards Cameron Couball (8.7 ppg) and Zilijan Jones (7.3 ppg, 4.0 apg).
