AUSTIN, Texas -- The Concordia University Texas men's basketball team set a pair of team records after blowing past Hardin-Simmons University, 106-78, on Thursday night at Concordia Fieldhouse. The Tornados (11-9, 9-7 ASC) set records for the most points scored at Concordia Fieldhouse and the largest margin of victory (28).
CTX received a career-night from freshman guard #Nick Haynes# who poured in 25 points and tied the Concordia Fieldhouse record with six three-pointers. Senior forward #Brad Walker# netted 24 points off the bench on 7-of-17 shooting from the field.
The Tornados took control of the contest early in the first half by pushing the pace. Hardin-Simmons (4-16, 4-12 ASC) fell behind 21-11 in the first seven minutes. Over the next 10 minutes, the Tornados would push their lead to 17 (52-35). The Cowboys would cut the lead down to 10 (54-44), but a pair of Walker free throws increased Concordia's lead to 12 (56-44) at halftime.
Out of halftime CTX stepped on the gas pedal, racing out to a 20-point advantage (72-52). Hardin-Simmons would reel off a 17-7 run to pull within eight (77-69), but a three-pointer from senior forward #Reza Farahani# put the lead back into double digits for good. The Tornados cruised the rest of the way and extended their lead to as much as 31 points (106-75).
Concordia shot 46.7% (35-of-75) from the field and 40.7% (11-of-27) from behind the three-point line in the win. Farahani finished with 10 points for CTX. Freshman guard #Tayler Jacobs# netted a career-best 12 points in his first collegiate start. Jacobs also handed out a team-high seven assists.
The Tornados improved to 10-1 all-time against Hardin-Simmons in Austin.
John Derr led the Cowboys with 23 points.
Concordia will continue its three-game homestand by hosting McMurry University on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
