BOX SCORE
Austin, Texas –
Tayler Jacobs registered a career-high 33 points, but it wasn't enough, as Mary Hardin-Baylor earned a 107-100 overtime victory over the Concordia University Texas men's basketball team on Monday, Jan. 10 at the Concordia Field House. The seesaw affair featured 11 ties and 17 lead changes before the Cru escaped with the seven-point win.
Down 91-90 with under 30 seconds left in regulation, the Tornados had the ball with the opportunity to take the last shot and earn a season sweep over the Cru for the first time in program history. Jacobs, who entered the game ranked second in the ASC with a .911 free throw percentage, got himself to the line by driving down the right side and taking a foul with 4.6 seconds on the clock. His first shot bounced out, but the second one went in and forced overtime.
Mary Hardin-Baylor (11-2, ASC 7-2), whose only loss in its last 10 games came to Concordia a week ago, scored the first four points of the extra session before
Donald Lee cut the lead to one by canning a 3-pointer from the right arc. However, that was as close as the Tornados would come before time expired. The Cru netted their last six points at the free throw line to produce the final outcome.
Concordia built up an 11-point lead with 1:48 in the first half on a good jumper by
Nick Haynes and appeared to be in control. Marlon Miller, however, netted the game's next eight points as his team only found itself down by three at the recess.
Robert Moore gave the Cru their first advantage in the second half by hitting a jumper to make it 61-59 with under 12 minutes remaining in regulation, but the Tornados fought back and went ahead by an 84-78 score by the final media timeout with under five minutes left. A trey by
Hunter Martin gave Concordia the six-point advantage. Cory Meals made a layup to put the Cru back on top at the 3:03 mark and went up 91-90 on Miller's good free throws before Jacobs went 1-for-2 from the line at the other end to extend the game an additional five minutes.
Jacobs, who set a career high for points (33) for the second straight game after netting 21 against Ozarks two days ago, also contributed four assists and two steals to lead Concordia.
Darien Harris and
Chris McDermott netted 13 and 10 points off the bench, respectively, while
Justin Reefer fell just shy of his third double-double of the season with 10 points and nine boards. Miller contributed 27 points off the bench to pace Mary Hardin-Baylor. James Allen netted 24.
Concordia (7-6, ASC 5-4) will visit Texas Lutheran on Thursday, Jan. 13 at 7:30 p.m.
