BOX SCORE
Kerrville, Texas –
Josh Johnson netted 17 points, grabbed six rebounds and blocked three shots in leading the Concordia University Texas men's basketball team to a 103-86 win over Schreiner on Saturday, Jan. 15 at the Edison Center. The Tornados, who led wire-to-wire and reached the 100-point plateau for the third time in four games, have won four straight contests on the road.
Schreiner (6-8, ASC 4-6), which trailed by a 57-48 score at halftime, chipped away at the deficit and brought it all the way down to two points when Ethan Catalani put back his own miss to make it 69-67 with 10:54 to play. Keyed by
Hunter Martin's six straight points on consecutive possessions, including a rare four-point play in which the guard made a layup and two ensuing free throws due to an intentional foul call on a Mountaineer, the Tornados answered with a 22-6 run in the next 5:39 to go ahead by a 91-73 score and end any hopes of a Mountaineer comeback.
Concordia (9-6, ASC 7-4), which has not lost a game away from home since dropping an 85-82 decision at Louisiana College on Dec. 9, got nine early points from
Nick Haynes and jumped out to a 17-6 lead by the first media timeout. The sophomore guard canned a pair of 3-pointers as well as three free throws after he was sent to the ground on a shot attempt from beyond the arc.
Schreiner rallied to keep the deficit in single digits for much of the second half. Darren Smith, who entered the game ranked third in the league in scoring and first among freshmen, netted 20 points in the opening period to keep his team in the game. Followed by Smith's sixth field goal of the half,
Chris McDermott sunk a pair of free throws to give the visitors a nine-point lead at the break.
Led by Johnson, Concordia, which shot 88.9 percent from the free throw line (32-for-36), had six players net double figures. Haynes finished with 15, making three of his four attempts from long range, while McDermott added 10 points and six rebounds.
Darius Anderson, who registered career highs for points (20) and steals (5) in the Texas Lutheran win, picked right up where he left off by netting 13 points off the bench. Martin and
Larry Durand finished with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Jacobs had a solid all-around performance, finishing with nine points, nine rebounds, five assists and four steals. Smith paced Schreiner with 22 points, while Riley Battle and Tyrie Prince contributed 19 and 16, respectively, to round out nine players who netted double-digit points between the teams.
Concordia will look to continue building momentum when it continues ASC play when McMurry visits on Thursday, Jan. 20 at 7:30 p.m.
