BOX SCORE
Alpine, Texas – Jimmy Martinez netted 29 points and found Percy Settle for the game-winning bucket in the waning seconds to lead Sul Ross State to a 100-99 victory over Concordia University Texas in American Southwest Conference men's basketball action on Thursday, Jan. 27 at the Gallego Center. The Tornados had their winning streak on the road snapped at four games.
With the shot clock turned off and Sul Ross State up by a 98-96 score, Concordia had the ball and an opportunity to go for the last shot. On the possession,
Nick Haynes spotted a 3-pointer from the right corner and buried it to put the Tornados ahead by a point. With about 12 seconds to work with, the Lobos, however, came back the other way and got the basket they needed from Settle in transition. He took a pass from Martinez and beat several Tornado defenders with a short jumper from the left side.
Leading 51-43 at the break, Concordia quickly built up a 16-point lead early in the second half.
Tayler Jacobs canned a three on the Tornados' first possession and hit a jumper to put the visitors ahead by a 63-47 score at the 18:30 mark.
Sul Ross State (8-10, ASC 7-7) chipped away at the deficit, bringing the Tornado lead down to two points on five occasions before finally breaking through. Justin Weldon swooshed a jumper to tie the game at 88-all before following up with a trey at the 4:07 mark to put the Lobos ahead by a 91-88 score. Capped by Haynes' trifecta, the Tornados were able to rally from behind before Settle was able to beat the buzzer with the game-winning shot.
After the teams traded baskets to start the game, the Lobos were able to break out to a 16-9 lead on a Martinez jumper with 12:58 on the clock. The Tornados came back and took their first lead since the opening minutes on a
Donald Lee jumper at 27-25, but the lead continued to seesaw between the teams before the end of the half.
With Concordia trailing 40-38 at the 2:22 mark, Lee gave the visitors the lead back for the rest of the stanza by making a turnaround jumper and converting a free throw.
Kenny Williams produced the 54-43 halftime score by draining a buzzer-beating trifecta from the top of the key at NBA range.
Concordia was led by Haynes, who netted a team-high 21 points in just 19 minutes of action. Williams added 18 points and four assists, sparking the Tornado bench which outscored the Lobos' reserves, 53-18, in the game.
Josh Johnson contributed 13 points, four rebounds and four blocks. In addition to Martinez's game-high 29 points, the Lobos were also paced by Settle and Weldon. Settle netted 21 points, including the game-winning shot, while Weldon had 15.
