BOX SCORE
Austin, Texas – Darius Anderson and Henry Riasco combined for 32 points off the bench in leading the Concordia University Texas men's basketball team to a 108-73 victory over Concordia-Chicago in its opening game of the Christmas Classic on Thursday, Dec. 29 at the CTX Field House. The Tornados, who got 68 points from their reserves, posted their most lopsided victory since defeating Howard Payne by a 119-74 decision on Jan. 26, 2008.
Concordia-Chicago (2-8) blasted ahead to a 9-0 lead before Terence Sims finally put the Tornados on the scoreboard by canning a 3-pointer at the 15:26 mark. The basket sparked the squad to score 13 straight while not allowing the Cougars to convert a field goal for nearly nine minutes. Nick Haynes made a trey that created a 36-26 score with 4:40 to play in the first, as the Tornados led by double digits for the rest of the game.
CTX, which held a 50-34 advantage at the break, continued to pour it on in the second half. A Josh Johnson fastbreak layup extended the lead to 20 before another layup on a fastbreak by Chris McDermott made it 77-46 with nine minutes remaining.
The Tornado advantage maxed out at 39 points on three occasions thanks to a 3-pointer by Larry Durand to go along with a pair of free throws and a layup by Brett DeMetrotian. DJ Ozigbo made a running jumper for his first career points before Jeromy Bynum sank a jumper to give the Tornados the 35-point win.
Darius Anderson scored 18 points and added three steals to lead the Tornados, while Riasco and Haynes netted 14 apiece. Donald Lee recorded his first career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Durand finished with nine points and a game-high six assists.
The Cougars were paced by Khirey Floyd and Issa Avery, who added 18 and 14 points, respectively. Avery also posted four steals.
Concordia (6-3), which has won six of its last seven games, concludes play at the Christmas Classic when it hosts Wisconsin-Stout tomorrow at 7:30 p.m.
