POSTGAME INTERVIEW WITH KENNY WILLIAMS

Austin, Texas
Kenny Williams registered eight points, six steals and five assists and two other Tornados scored in double figures in leading the Concordia University Texas men's basketball team to a convincing 88-57 victory over Sul Ross State on Thursday, Jan. 26 at the CTX Field House. The Tornados, who moved into a tie for fourth in the standings with Schreiner, have won their last two games by an average margin of 24 points.

Sul Ross State (5-13, ASC 5-9), which dropped its fourth straight game, came out as the aggressor and built up a 16-7 advantage by the midway point of the first half. Jordan Merchant and Bralyn Thomas fueled a 14-2 Lobo run by netting four points apiece during that stretch.

Concordia (10-8, ASC 8-6), however, did not allow the visitors to hit a field goal for nearly eight minutes and rallied to go ahead by a 28-23 score thanks to a 3-point field goal by Nick Haynes. A buzzer-beating layup by Brett DeMetrotion gave the Tornados a 39-26 lead at the break.

The Lobos came within nine early on in the second half by getting layups from Colton Thompson and Juston Weldon on their first two possessions, but the Tornados scored the next 12 points to pull away. A jumper by Josh Johnson put the Tornados up 51-30 at the 16:08 mark. The lead ballooned to 33 seven times before Cristen Smith hit a layup in the waning seconds to produce the final score.

Haynes and Johnson finished with 14 and 12 points, respectively, to lead all Concordia scorers. In addition to his eight points, six steals and five steals, Williams committed just one turnover as the team's floor general. DeMetrotion and Henry Riasco added eight points apiece off the bench.

Sul Ross State, which did not have a double-digit scorer, got strong contributions from Colton Thompson and Darrell Gardner. Both players netted nine points. Thomas finished with six points and five steals.

Concordia will host Howard Payne on Saturday, Jan. 28 at 3 p.m.
