Nick Haynes made a 3-pointer at the buzzer to lift the Concordia University Texas men's basketball team to a 90-87 victory over Texas-Dallas on Thursday, Dec. 20 at the CTX Field House. The Tornados recorded their second straight victory against the Comets.

With the Tornados leading 87-84, Texas-Dallas took a timeout and had the ball with the opportunity to go for one last shot. Mitchell Anderson appeared to send the game to overtime when he drained a 3-pointer from the right arc to tie the game at 87s with 5.5 seconds left in regulation. Haynes, however, took a pass from Terry Corprew and canned a 3-pointer from the right arc on the other end that barely beat the buzzer to give the Tornados the win.

Concordia (5-2, ASC 4-1) scored the first five points of the game and never trailed in the first half. After Anderson made a 3-pointer to tie the game at 9-all, Haynes and Josh Sanchez made back-to-back shots from downtown to put the Tornados ahead for the rest of the frame. The hosts led by as many as 12 when a Dwayne Patterson layup made it 40-28 before the Comets cut the deficit to six at the break by getting a free throw from Chris McOmber.

The Tornados, who led 52-46 at the break, scored first in the second half on a good jumper by Larry Durand. Texas-Dallas, however, came back and took its first lead at 60-57 on an Anderson 3-pointer with 15:38, setting up a seesaw battle that would feature seven ties and eight lead changes over the final 20 minutes of play. After two missed free throws by Kyle Schleigh, Sanchez  made a key 3-pointer after receiving a pass from Corprew that gave Concordia an 83-81 advantage and the lead for the rest of the game, which ended with Haynes' buzzer-beating heroics from beyond the arc.

Haynes scored 21 points by shooting 7-for-14 from the field, including 5-for-10 from long range, and a perfect 2-for-2 from the line. Patterson posted a double-double with 25 points and 11 boards, while Sanchez and Brett DeMetrotion also scored in twin figures with 14 and 12 points, respectively. Corprew finished with seven points and five assists.

Schleigh paced Texas-Dallas (6-3, ASC 3-3) with 34 points and 13 boards. He also had a game-high five steals. Anderson contributed 13 points, five rebounds and four assists, while Carter Nash and McOmber also netted double figures in the losing effort.

Concordia will compete against Edgewood at a tournament hosted by Mary Hardin-Baylor on Friday, Dec. 28 at 5:30 p.m.
