BOX SCORE
Pineville, La. –
Nick Haynes and
Dwayne Patterson netted 26 points apiece to lead the Concordia University Texas men's basketball team to an 85-81 come-from-behind victory over Louisiana College on Saturday, Dec. 8 at the H.O. West Fieldhouse.
Concordia (3-2, ASC 3-1) got off to a fast start and led 9-2 after
Terry Corprew canned a 3-pointer nearly five minutes into the contest. Louisiana College, however, fought back and tied the game at 12-all on a Kevin Cottonham jumper before going ahead by a 16-14 score thanks to getting a bucket from Derrick Gardner. The Wildcats stayed in control for the rest of the half and built up a 13-point advantage on a Doc Welch jumper before the Tornados started their rally. Haynes canned a trifecta to create a 41-36 halftime score.
Louisiana College (1-4, ASC 1-2) built its lead back up to nine in the second half on a Gaines jump shot, but Concordia responded by rattling off 12 unanswered.
Brett DeMetrotion knotted the game at 49s before setting up a
Josh Sanchez trey that put the Tornados on top.
After the Wildcats regained the lead on a Welch trey shortly before the midway point, Concordia made one last push and used Patterson to seize the lead two more times. The junior transfer finished a 3-point play the old-fashioned way at the charity stripe at the 4:39 mark before making a jumper following a steal to put the Tornados ahead by an 80-79 score with under two minutes left. Haynes added five more points before it was all over, including a free throw with two seconds left that put the game on ice.
Haynes scored 19 of his 26 points in the second half to pace Concordia. Patterson netted 15 in the second half and shot 11-for-15 from the field while also finishing with six rebounds and three steals.
Jonathan Garza, Corprew and DeMetrotion each ended the game with eight points.
Romanaski Williams led five Louisiana College players in double figures with 12 points. Shaun Johnson and Gaines each scored 11, while Phillip George posted 10 points, seven assists and three steals.
Concordia will break for final exams and return to the court on Monday, Dec. 17 when it hosts Northwood at 3 p.m.
