Austin, Texas –
Josh Sanchez scored a career-high 26 points and
Dwayne Patterson posted his fifth straight double-double as the Concordia University Texas men's basketball team defeated Hardin-Simmons in a 116-83 rout on Thursday, Jan. 10 at the CTX Field House. The Tornados have won nine of their last 10 games and remained undefeated at home this winter.
Eric Taylor put Hardin-Simmons on the board first by driving in for a layup on the team's opening possession. Sanchez, however, hit a 3-pointer on the other end and Concordia never trailed the rest of the way. An old-fashioned 3-point play by
Brett DeMetrotion followed by a
Nick Haynes trey gave the Tornados a 26-13 cushion to work with.
Hardin-Simmons (9-4, ASC 6-2) stormed back and cut the lead to just two points when Andy Spears made it 34-32 by converting a pair of free throws. The Cowboys then sliced the lead to a single point on two occasions. But after Nelson made it 43-42 by sinking two free throws, Concordia scored the next nine points to go ahead by double figures and led by nine at halftime after Bernard Stiggers hit a buzzer-beating shot by finishing a baseball pass from Darius Singletary.
Larry Durand set the tone for what would be a lopsided second half by nailing a trifecta on the Tornados' first possession. Concordia, which led by double figures the rest of the way, went ahead by 20 on a
Shelby Parson free throw at the 8:27 and by 30 when a
Terry Corprew 3-pointer set up by
Arty Vela made it 106-76 with 5:19 on the clock. With the benches cleared, the Tornados extended their lead by as many as 36 when Vela assisted on a
Kyle Coulter layup and eventually cruised to the 33-point win.
In addition to scoring 26 points, Sanchez led Concordia by also contributing four assists and three steals. Patterson finished with 20 points and 16 boards, while Haynes added 14 points and two steals.
Jared Galvan had 11 points and three rebounds in a reserve role.
Hardin-Simmons got a 19-point effort from Andy Spears off the bench. Singletary posted 14 points and four assists, while Eric Taylor tallied 12 points and five boards.
Concordia (11-3, ASC 7-2) will play its final non-conference game of the regular season when it hosts Fisher College on Sunday, Jan. 13 at 3 p.m.
