Josh Sanchez scored 19 points, but the Concordia University Texas men's basketball team dropped its first home game of the season to Mary Hardin-Baylor by a 94-81 score on Tuesday, Jan. 29 at the CTX Field House.
The first half had two ties and two lead changes before Mary Hardin-Baylor seized control. James Allen hit a layup to break an 8-all tie to spark a 17-1 run for the Crusaders. An Antonie Chaney trifecta capped the stretch at the 12:33 mark, prompting the Tornados to take a timeout. Concordia
Concordia was able to trim the lead down to eight points in the half on a
Terry Corprew layup, but the Crusdaders responded with seven unanswered to go up 35-20 on a Kitrick Bell layup with 7:25 to play. Bell hit another layup after grabbing an offensive rebound to put the visitors ahead by a 50-31 score at recess.
Mary Hardin-Baylor (17-3, ASC 13-1) led by as many as 25 on an Allen free throw that made it 69-44 with under 12 minutes left before the Tornados attempted to rally. Trailing 79-59, Concordia embarked on an 11-1 run to bring the deficit down to 10. But after a Sanchez layup made it 80-70, Thomas Orr and Brian Todd followed by making two free throws apiece to keep the Tornados at bay. Allen and Chaney also hit charity shots down the stretch to help seal the victory for the Crusaders.
Sanchez scored his 19 points for Concordia by hitting seven of his 18 attempts from the floor and all five of his shots from the stripe. Corprew contributed 15 points off the bench, while
Dwayne Patterson grabbed 12 boards.
Mary Hardin-Baylor got a 24-point, 24-rebound effort from Bell, which included shooting 9-for-16 from the floor. Orr finished with 20 points, eight rebounds and two assists off the bench.
Concordia (15-5, ASC 10-4), which has already qualified for the American Southwest Conference Tournament, visits Hardin-Simmons on Saturday, Feb. 2 at 3 p.m.
