Dwayne Patterson led four Tornado double-digit scorers with 20 points in leading the Concordia University Texas men's basketball team to a 116-91 triumph over Sul Ross State on Thursday, Feb. 14 at the CTX Field House. With the victory, the Tornados matched a Division III program by notching their 19th win of the season.
The beginning of the game was close with five ties and two lead changes until Concordia started to pull away in the final seven minutes of the opening frame. Patterson gave the Tornados their first double-digit lead at 36-26 by recording a 3-point play with 6:36 remaining before
Darien Harris made two free throws to extend the margin to 20 with 1:35 left. A pair of shots from the stripe by Chuck Williams made it 58-40 at the recess.
Concordia scored the first two points of the second half on Patterson free throws and never looked back. The lead ballooned up to 30 when
Henry Riasco converted a layup to create a 96-67 score before assisting on a
Terry Corprew trifecta that allowed the Tornados to reach the century mark with 9:44 on the clock, putting the game well out of reach for the Lobos.
Patterson scored his game-high 20 points by shooting 6-for-10 from the field and 8-for-11 from the line for Concordia, which also won 19 games during the 2007-08 season when it advanced to the championship game of the ASC Tournament.
Nick Haynes finished with 17 points and five steals, while
Josh Sanchez and Galvan netted 16 points apiece.
Sul Ross State (5-19, ASC 4-14) was paced by Juston Weldon and Ryan Hagan. Weldon contributed 17 points and 13 rebounds, while Hagan had 14 points and three picks.
Concordia (19-5, ASC 13-5) will wrap up the regular season when it hosts Howard Payne on Saturday, Feb. 16 at 3 p.m. The Tornados' four-member senior class will be recognized before the contest.
