AUSTIN, Texas – Josh Sanchez scored a game-high 33 points, and the Concordia University Texas men's basketball team overcame an early 10-point deficit to defeat Louisiana College, 83-80, on Saturday at Concordia Fieldhouse.
Sanchez was 11-of-21 from the field, including 3-for-9 from beyond the arc. The American Southwest Conference's leading scorer also knocked down 8-of-11 free throws in 34 minutes of action.
Dwayne Patterson logged his team-leading 10th double-double of the season, as the 6-foot-5, 205-pound senior forward scored 15 points and grabbed a game-best 14 rebounds.
Jared Galvan and
Andre Potts also chipped in with 10 points apiece.
Concordia Texas (15-4, 12-4 ASC) trailed 67-63 with 8:11 remaining in the contest. However, the Tornados reeled off a 17-4 run to take a nine-point advantage and control of the league tilt.
The Tornados used three 3-pointers, including a pair from Sanchez, and six layups to fuel the spurt.
The Wildcats (9-8, 9-6 ASC) managed to get within two after Kevin Lewis hit a 3-pointer with 2:35 to play. However, Concordia pushed the lead back to give following a Patterson free throw and Sanchez layup. Lewis nailed a jumper in the final minute, but he missed a potential game-tying 3-pointer with 16 seconds remaining.
The Tornados faced a 21-11 deficit in the first half, but battled back and trimmed the Louisiana College lead to just three points (38-35) by halftime.
Lewis paced the Wildcats with 29 points, including 15 from downtown.
